664 Squadron was formed in 1969 at Farnborough.

It spent the majority of its early years as part of the British Army of the Rhine, based at various places in West Germany during the Cold War.

By 1994 it was part of 4 Regiment at Detmold, Germany when the drawdown of British Forces in Germany brought the unit back to the UK.

The Gazelle and Lynx helicopters of 4 Regiment arrived at Wattisham to join the already present 3 Regiment.

After conversion to the new Apache AH1 attack helicopter, the squadron deployed to Afghanistan numerous times to support Operation Herrick.

664 Squadron continues to fly from Wattisham as part of 4 Regiment.
