662 Squadron AAC

Squadron Motto: “Olethrion Omma” (Death Dealing Eye)

662 Squadron was formed as a RAF squadron on 30th September 1942. It operated in mainland Europe throughout the Second World War, disbanding in December 1945.

The numberplate was used in the 1960s for a Royal Auxiliary Air Force squadron based at Colerne.

On 1st November 1971 662 Squadron reformed as an Army Air Corps squadron at Soest, West Germany. When 3 Regiment moved from BAOR to Wattisham in 1993, their Gazelles and Lynx helicopters arrived with them.

In the early 21st Century, 662 Squadron deployed to Iraq during Operation Telic with their Gazelle AH1s and Lynx AH7s.

The squadron converted to Apache AH1s and undertook numerous deployments to Afghanistan for Operation Herrick.

In late 2020 the squadron began converting to the new Apache AH-64E, becoming the lead unit for this much improved version of the combat proven helicopter.
